The Dangers of Herbal Supplements
A Growing Problem
A new study has revealed that the use of herbal supplements is widespread, despite the fact that many of these supplements have been identified as potentially harmful to the liver. The study, which was published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, found that nearly one-third of adults in the United States have used herbal supplements in the past year.
Liver Damage
The study also found that the use of herbal supplements is associated with an increased risk of liver damage. The risk of liver damage is highest in people who take high doses of herbal supplements or who take multiple supplements at the same time. Some of the herbal supplements that have been linked to liver damage include:
- Kava
- Ephedra
- Pennyroyal
- Comfrey
- Chamomile
What You Can Do
If you are considering taking herbal supplements, it is important to talk to your doctor first. Your doctor can help you determine whether or not herbal supplements are right for you and can help you avoid any potential risks.
