Early Life and Political Beginnings

Bernie Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941. He became involved in politics while attending the University of Chicago, where he protested the Vietnam War and advocated for civil rights. In 1981, he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vermont, a position he held for four terms.

U.S. House of Representatives

In 1990, Sanders was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served for 16 years. He was a vocal advocate for progressive policies, including universal healthcare, campaign finance reform, and environmental protection.

U.S. Senate

In 2006, Sanders was elected to the U.S. Senate. He is serving his third term, having won re-election in 2012 and 2018. As a senator, he has continued to champion progressive causes, including the "Medicare for All" healthcare plan and the Green New Deal.

Presidential Campaigns

Sanders ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020. Although he did not win either nomination, he mobilized a large grassroots movement of supporters who advocated for his policies.
