Derek Clancey: Hockey Player and Coach

Early Life and Career

Derek Clancey was born on April 16, 1969, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. He began his hockey career in the provincial junior league, playing for the St. John's Caps. He was drafted into the National Hockey League (NHL) by the Hartford Whalers in 1989.

Professional Career

Clancey made his professional debut in 1991 with the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League (AHL). He spent the next eight seasons playing in the ECHL, primarily with the Hampton Roads Admirals. In 441 games, he amassed 524 points, including 157 goals and 367 assists.

Coaching Career

After retiring as a player in 1999, Clancey began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the Admirals. He later served as head coach of the Alaska Aces and the Chesapeake Bayhawks. In 2017, he was inducted into the AthleteBuilder Category Hall of Fame.
